The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) observed its 88th Raising Day on 27 July 2026.
The force was established on 27 July 1939 as the Crown Representative's Police in British India.
It was renamed and reconstituted as the CRPF under the CRPF Act, 1949.
It is India's largest Central Armed Police Force, functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Its roles include internal security, counter-terrorism, anti-Left-wing-extremism operations, election security and disaster response.
The CAPFs are the central government's armed police organisations under the Ministry of Home Affairs, distinct from the Army (which is under the Ministry of Defence). There are seven: CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NSG and Assam Rifles. Each has a primary mandate — the CRPF for internal security and law and order, the BSF for the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, the CISF for industrial and airport security, and so on. The CRPF is the largest of them.
Simple Analogy: Think of the CAPFs as specialist units of one family, each guarding a different kind of frontier — the CRPF's frontier is internal security.
