The Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022, recruits soldiers ('Agniveers') for four years, after which about 75% return to civilian life. To assure them of career pathways, the government had announced reservations in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles. The new SSB rules operationalise this by earmarking half of the constable-level general duty vacancies for ex-Agniveers, with relaxations tailored to their prior service.

The move addresses a key concern about the Agnipath model — the post-service prospects of Agniveers — by converting promised CAPF reservations into notified recruitment rules. The Sashastra Seema Bal guards India's borders with Nepal and Bhutan, so absorbing trained ex-servicemen also strengthens border-guarding manpower.
