The Union Environment Ministry issued the seventh draft notification declaring the Western Ghats an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA), published on 27 July 2026.
The draft proposes an ESA of 56,825.7 sq km spread across six states.
Karnataka has the largest proposed area (20,668 sq km) and Gujarat the smallest (449 sq km).
The draft bans commercial mining, quarrying, sand mining, new thermal power plants and large-scale construction in the ESA.
The public has 60 days to file objections before the notification is finalised.
