The government plans to develop 44 airports under a hub-and-spoke model to boost international connectivity.
The network will have 4 hub airports and 40 spoke airports.
At present there is one hub (Delhi) and two spokes (Varanasi and Amritsar).
Air India has launched 'Easy Connect' flights under the model, starting from Varanasi and Amritsar.
The aim is to link Tier-II and Tier-III cities to international destinations via hubs.
In a hub-and-spoke network, flights from many smaller 'spoke' airports feed into a few large 'hub' airports, from which long-haul and international flights depart. Instead of every small city needing direct international flights, passengers connect through a hub. Air India's 'Easy Connect' lets travellers from a spoke city drop baggage and complete immigration at their origin airport and travel through to an overseas destination via the hub — making global travel accessible from smaller cities.
Simple Analogy: Like a bicycle wheel: many spokes lead into a central hub, from where the long journey continues.
