Magma General Insurance is a non-life (general) insurer. The transaction, first announced earlier in 2026, sees the FMCG-to-Ayurveda group Patanjali (co-founded by Baba Ramdev) and the DS Group enter the general insurance business. Because insurance is a regulated sector, changes in ownership require prior clearance from the IRDAI, which supervises solvency, governance and policyholder protection.

The approval marks the entry of a large domestic consumer group into general insurance and illustrates how ownership changes in insurers are gatekept by the IRDAI. For exam purposes, it is a clear example of the regulator's role and the distinction between life and general (non-life) insurance.
