Maharashtra has approved India's first AI-powered bird sanctuary at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary.
It comes with a Rs 45-crore Eco-Nature Park spread over about 20 hectares along the Thane Creek shoreline.
An AI-based system will track and identify birds in real time within a 1.5-km radius.
It will provide species identification, centralised data and digital analytics for conservation.
The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is a designated Ramsar site.
A Ramsar site is a wetland designated as internationally important under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty signed in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971. Wetlands like Thane Creek are vital habitats — they support migratory birds such as flamingos, filter water and buffer floods. India has a large and growing number of Ramsar sites. Adding AI monitoring lets managers automatically count and identify birds and detect threats, improving conservation of such a site.
