Franco Baresi, former AC Milan captain and Italy international, died on 31 July 2026 at age 66, having played his entire senior career (1977-1997) for AC Milan across 719 appearances.

He won six Serie A titles and three European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles with Milan, which retired his No. 6 shirt after his career.

He was part of Italy's 1982 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and captained Italy to the 1994 World Cup final, lost to Brazil on penalties.

His final public appearance was in February 2026, carrying the Olympic torch into San Siro for the Milan Cortina Winter Games opening ceremony.
