Indian Railways rolled out online personal luggage booking for passengers with reserved tickets, effective 31 July 2026, per a Railway Board order dated 20 July 2026.
Confirmed passengers in reserved classes can now book excess luggage online in advance, avoiding station counter visits; waitlisted/unconfirmed ticket holders cannot use the service.
Free luggage allowance ranges from 35 kg (Second Class) to 70 kg (AC First Class); excess baggage beyond the free limit is charged at 1.5 times the applicable rate, within class-wise maximum limits.
The online system displays free allowance, maximum limits, prohibited items, and penalty details upfront for transparency.
| Class | Free Allowance |
|---|---|
| AC First Class (1A) | 70 kg |
| First Class / AC 2 Tier | 50 kg |
| AC 3 Tier / AC 3 Economy / AC Chair Car / Sleeper | 40 kg |
| Second Class | 35 kg |
Previously, passengers with excess luggage had to visit parcel/luggage booking counters at the station before travel. The new online system lets passengers reserve their allowed luggage limit at the time of ticket booking itself, removing the paperwork and counter visit.
Simple Analogy: Like pre-booking checked baggage online for a flight instead of arriving at the airport counter to sort it out.
