Goa's Directorate of Settlement and Land Records is launching a month-long field inquiry under the NAKSHA pilot programme in Margao, Cuncolim and Panaji.
NAKSHA stands for National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations.
It is a GIS-based urban land records modernisation programme of the Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development.
It runs under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP).
The pilot covers 152 Urban Local Bodies across 26 states and 3 Union Territories, with the Survey of India as technical partner.
NAKSHA replaces manual urban land surveying with an aerial and geospatial workflow, followed by ground verification.
An ordinary aerial photograph distorts distances, because objects directly below the camera appear at their true position while those towards the edges are displaced, and terrain relief shifts features further still. Orthorectification mathematically corrects the image for camera tilt, lens characteristics and ground elevation, producing a picture in which every point is in its correct map position. Only then can property boundaries be traced from the image and treated as legally meaningful measurements rather than approximations.
Simple Analogy: It is like flattening a photograph taken at an angle into a true overhead plan, so that measuring across it gives the same answer as measuring on the ground.
