The Union Minister for Rural Development released over ₹10,000 crore to twelve states under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).
PMAY-G, launched in 2016 by restructuring the earlier Indira Awaas Yojana, targeted 2.95 crore rural houses for FY 2016-17 to FY 2023-24, extended for FY 2024-25 to FY 2028-29 with an additional target of 2 crore houses.
Unit assistance is ₹1.20 lakh in plain areas and ₹1.30 lakh in hilly/northeastern states, shared 60:40 (Centre:State) in plains and 90:10 in NE/Himalayan states; each house must be at least 25 sq.m with a hygienic cooking area.
Beneficiary selection uses SECC 2011 housing deprivation parameters, and the process is monitored via the AwaasSoft MIS and AwaasApp.
After meeting the original 2.95 crore house target (FY 2016-17 to FY 2023-24), the scheme was extended for another five years (FY 2024-25 to FY 2028-29) with an additional target of 2 crore houses.
Simple Analogy: Having largely completed its first big goal, the scheme was renewed with a fresh, smaller target for the next phase.
