The Lok Sabha passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 by voice vote on 31 July 2026, after it was introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 29 July 2026.
The Bill amends the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, changing the procedure for delayed registration of births and deaths.
Under the amended framework, a birth or death reported after two years will require an order from a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class; delays of one-two years continue to need a District/Sub-Divisional Magistrate's order.
