India's Defence Minister inaugurated the Shyok Tunnel on the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie (DS-DBO) Road in eastern Ladakh, as part of 125 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) infrastructure projects.
The 920-metre cut-and-cover tunnel, built by BRO at over 12,000 feet altitude, bypasses a road stretch regularly hit by snow, avalanches, and landslides, ensuring all-weather connectivity.
The DS-DBO Road is the only surface route to Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO), India's northernmost military outpost near the LAC, and also supports logistics toward the Siachen Glacier region.
The tunnel's strategic value has grown since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, enhancing India's operational readiness and border-defence logistics in eastern Ladakh.
The Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie Road is the only surface route connecting Daulat Beg Oldie — India's northernmost military outpost — with the rest of Ladakh. The Shyok Tunnel bypasses a section vulnerable to snow, avalanches, and landslides, ensuring year-round troop and supply movement critical after the 2020 Galwan Valley stand-off.
