Smt. Varsha Ashok Aglawe has become the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the first woman to head the 176-year-old institution, succeeding Shri Asit Saha.
A GSI veteran since 1992 with prior service at the Indian Bureau of Mines, she is a palaeontology/palynology expert who identified the Salbardi-Ghorpend area as a new Central Indian dinosaur nesting site and established a Palynology Laboratory at GSI's Lucknow office.
She has flagged critical mineral exploration, offshore mineral exploration, and deep-seated/concealed deposit exploration as priorities aligned with the Government's mineral-security agenda.
