Pradeep Rawat belonged to the generation of Indian actors who reached a national audience through the mythological television serials of the late 1980s before moving into film. His portrayal of Ashwatthama in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat, broadcast between 1988 and 1990, introduced him to viewers across the country at a time when a single state broadcaster commanded almost the entire television audience. He then built a long career as an antagonist in Telugu cinema in particular, while remaining a familiar presence in Hindi films, appearing in Sarfarosh, Lagaan and Ghajini. Working simultaneously across Telugu, Tamil and Hindi productions was less common in his early years than it later became, and his career spanned the period in which such crossover work turned from an exception into an established pattern in Indian cinema.
