Bharat Electronics Limited and Esri India signed a Memorandum of Understanding in New Delhi on 3 August 2026.
The MoU covers Geographic Information System, Location Intelligence and GeoAI solutions for the defence sector.
Areas of joint work include geospatial capabilities, defence electronics, systems integration and training support.
In-house development will be supported through the Indo ArcGIS platform.
BEL is a defence electronics public sector undertaking established in 1954 and headquartered in Bengaluru.
A Geographic Information System is a computer framework for capturing, storing, analysing and displaying data tied to locations. In defence it underpins military mapping, terrain analysis, asset tracking, mission planning and operational coordination — anything where the question is not merely what is happening but where. Location Intelligence is the analytical layer above it, combining geographic data with other datasets to support decisions. GeoAI applies artificial intelligence to geospatial data, so that patterns can be detected and predictions made automatically rather than by an analyst studying a map. The practical shift is one of scale: satellite imagery, drone feeds and sensor data arrive faster than humans can interpret them, and GeoAI is how that volume becomes usable.
Simple Analogy: GIS is the map, Location Intelligence is the analyst reading it, and GeoAI is the analyst who never sleeps and can read ten thousand maps at once.
Defence electronics public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence; supplies radars, communication systems, electronic warfare equipment and network-centric systems to the armed forces
