The Gujarat health department has stepped up surveillance, treatment and preventive action, with confirmed patients moved to civil hospitals at Gandhinagar, Sabarkantha-Himmatnagar, Patan, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. The central preventive measure is vector control: pesticide spraying in animal husbandry areas, because sandflies breed in the cracks of mud walls, cattle sheds and organic debris typical of rural housing. That is also the reason the disease is concentrated in particular districts rather than spread evenly — the risk follows housing type and the presence of livestock more than it follows population density. Since there is no vaccine and no specific antiviral, the response rests on three things: reducing the vector population, detecting fever cases in children early, and moving suspected cases quickly to hospitals capable of intensive paediatric care.

Chandipura is a recurring rather than a novel threat — it has produced outbreaks in central and western India for decades, and a substantial outbreak occurred in Gujarat in 2024. That recurrence is what makes it significant for policy. A disease that returns in the same regions during the same season, affecting the same age group through a known vector, is in principle preventable through pre-monsoon vector control, and each outbreak is evidence of how far that preventive work fell short. The case fatality is high because the illness moves faster than a rural family can usually reach tertiary care.
