Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, widely known as D.Y. Patil, died on 4 August 2026 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, at the age of 90.
He served as Governor of Tripura from November 2009 to March 2013 and as Governor of Bihar from March 2013 to November 2014, also holding additional charge of West Bengal.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991 for social work.
He founded the D.Y. Patil Group, which runs more than 182 educational institutions and seven universities along with healthcare facilities.
In electoral politics he served as Mayor of Kolhapur from 1957 to 1962 and as a Congress MLA from 1967 to 1978; his final rites were held with full state honours.
