IIT Hyderabad and Crimson Energy Experts launched ANUGYAN, the Nuclear Technology Orientation Programme, on 3 August 2026.
It is described as India's first industry-academia course for engineers and professionals in the civil nuclear energy sector.
The three-month fully residential programme is conducted at the IIT Hyderabad campus with joint certification from both partners.
The curriculum covers reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, radiation shielding, Small Modular Reactors, nuclear safety, AERB compliance and simulator-based training.
It follows an MoU with Dassault Systèmes linked to the Centre of Design Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (CODENE).
SMRs are nuclear reactors of much smaller output than conventional plants, designed so that major components are factory-built and shipped to site for assembly rather than constructed in place. Two features matter. The first is construction economics: large reactors are built as one-off engineering projects and routinely overrun on time and cost, whereas modular units can in principle be produced repeatedly on a production line. The second is siting — a smaller reactor needs less land and less cooling water and can be placed near an industrial cluster or at a retired coal plant site that already has grid connections. For India, with a target of roughly 100 GWe by 2047 against about 8.8 GWe today, the arithmetic of building only large reactors is daunting, which is why SMRs feature prominently in current planning and in this curriculum.
Simple Analogy: Conventional reactors are cathedrals, each designed and built on its own site. SMRs are an attempt to build reactors the way aircraft are built — repeatedly, in a factory, to a fixed design.
