The Kerala Forest Department has decided to identify and remove illegally geotagged locations inside the state's forests from online mapping platforms.
The department cites risks to human life, disturbance to wildlife and damage to ecologically fragile zones.
Trekking routes used by forest staff inside protected areas, including parts of Silent Valley, had appeared on online maps.
The department's IT wing will prepare a list of illegally tagged locations for submission to the mapping platforms, and legal action against uploaders is being considered.
India has no standalone law banning geotagging; it becomes unlawful when it violates statutes such as the Official Secrets Act, 1923 or the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
Geotagging means attaching geographical metadata — latitude, longitude, altitude, date and time — to digital content such as photographs, videos or social media posts, so that the exact place where the content originated can be identified. It underpins navigation, disaster response, environmental monitoring, land records and logistics. It becomes illegal not because of the act itself, for which there is no dedicated prohibition in Indian law, but because of what is tagged and where it is published. Marking a military installation, an ammunition depot or a nuclear facility can attract the Official Secrets Act, 1923; publishing an individual's precise location without consent engages the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; and marking restricted ecological locations inside protected forests without approval breaches forest and wildlife regulations.
Simple Analogy: A map pin is harmless in itself. Dropping one on a neighbour's bedroom, an army base, or a landslide-prone ravine inside a reserve forest is what turns it into a problem.
Applies where photography or mapping discloses prohibited places such as defence installations and strategic infrastructure.
Governs the processing of personal data, including publishing an identifiable individual's precise location without consent.
General criminal law provisions may apply where geotagging facilitates an offence such as stalking or trespass.
Regulate entry into protected areas; publicising routes that encourage unauthorised entry undermines this regime.
