The Rath Yatra is the annual chariot festival at Puri in which the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are drawn in three separate wooden chariots from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple and back. Fresh chariots are constructed every year to prescribed measurements by hereditary carpenter families using specified timber, and are dismantled after the festival — the craft tradition is therefore rebuilt annually rather than preserved as an object. Textual descriptions of the festival appear in Puranic sources including the Brahma, Padma and Skanda Puranas and the Kapila Samhita. European travellers recorded it from the 13th century onwards, with detailed accounts from the 17th century; the English word 'juggernaut' derives from these accounts of the chariots. The nomination rests on this combination of documented antiquity, continuous practice and mass community participation.
