Russia's S8000 Banderol is a lightweight air-launched cruise missile first officially acknowledged in a state media report on 12 July 2026.
By 29 July 2026 it had completed testing and entered serial production.
It was first associated with launch from the Orion, also called Inokhodets, unmanned aerial vehicle, and later from Mi-28 attack helicopters and suspected ground-based launchers.
It uses a commercially available Chinese Swiwin turbojet engine and an OFBCh-150 high-explosive fragmentation warhead with about 49.5 kg of explosive.
Reported range varies between 350 and 400 km in Ukrainian military intelligence assessments, and up to 500 km in other accounts.
A cruise missile is a guided weapon that flies through the atmosphere for most of its flight, sustained by an air-breathing engine and generally at low altitude, which makes it harder for radar to detect than a ballistic missile that arcs high above the atmosphere. The Banderol's significance lies less in its performance than in its economics. It is small, uses a commercially available turbojet of the kind sold for model aircraft, carries components sourced from several countries, and can be launched from a drone or a helicopter rather than a bomber. That combination makes it far cheaper than a conventional cruise missile — and air defence is expensive, so a defender forced to expend costly interceptors against cheap incoming weapons loses the exchange even when every shot succeeds.
Simple Analogy: It is the difference between being attacked with a rifle and being swarmed with slingshots. Each slingshot is trivial; having to answer every one with a rifle round is not.
