The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a draft notification proposing mandatory Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication systems in new vehicles.
The proposal covers vehicle categories L, M and N and is linked to the AIS-230 standard under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
From 1 October 2027, vehicles in these categories that are manufactured with V2V systems must comply with AIS-230.
From 1 October 2028, all newly manufactured vehicles in these categories must be fitted with AIS-230-compliant V2V systems.
The Department of Telecommunications exempted the 5.875-5.925 GHz band from licensing on 10 June 2026, clearing the spectrum for V2V use.
V2V is a short-range wireless system through which vehicles broadcast basic status information — position, speed, direction of travel and braking status — several times a second, and listen for the same information from vehicles around them. Onboard software interprets these messages and warns the driver of hazards that cannot yet be seen: a vehicle braking hard three cars ahead, a car approaching fast on a blind bend, a vehicle running a red light at a junction. The essential difference from radar, cameras and lidar is that those sensors need line of sight, whereas radio messages travel around corners and through obstructions. V2V is one part of a wider Intelligent Transportation System framework that also includes vehicle-to-infrastructure links to traffic signals and roadside units.
Simple Analogy: Cameras and radar give a vehicle eyes. V2V gives it a shared radio channel on which every nearby vehicle constantly announces what it is doing — useful precisely when nothing can be seen.
