The Indian Army inaugurated AASHVAST, a software analysis and validation laboratory, at the Directorate General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering headquarters in Delhi Cantonment on 14 August 2026.
AASHVAST stands for Assessment and Analysis of Electronic Systems Hardware for Vulnerabilities and Security Threats, and examines military drones and other defence electronics for backdoors, embedded credentials, hidden remote-access tools and unauthorised components.
The lab is fully air-gapped and read-only, so nothing can be written to the hardware under test, and it checks whether a system accepts only manufacturer-approved software updates.
It also tests how drones behave under GPS spoofing and jamming, and screens for foreign-origin hardware and code in the supply chain.
An air-gapped system has no network connection at all, so a compromised device under test cannot phone home or spread. A read-only setup means the lab can copy and inspect firmware but cannot alter it, preserving the evidence and the device.
Simple Analogy: A sealed room where you may photograph the suspect device but never touch its contents.

Screening imported and locally assembled systems for unauthorised chips and code is the security-side counterpart to indigenisation lists and positive-indigenisation policy.
Both are electronic warfare techniques that disrupt satellite navigation - spoofing feeds a false position, jamming drowns the signal. India's NavIC constellation is the sovereign alternative these tests ultimately point towards.
