South Sudan became independent on 9 July 2011 after decades of civil war with Sudan. Within days, on 8 July 2011, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1996 establishing the United Nations Mission in South Sudan to help consolidate peace in the new state. Its mandate has since been reoriented around the protection of civilians, the creation of conditions for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and investigating human rights, and support to the implementation of the peace agreement. Nicholas Haysom of South Africa headed the mission until his death; in April 2026 the Secretary-General appointed Anita Kiki Gbeho of Ghana as Special Representative and Head of UNMISS, having earlier served as Deputy Special Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan since 2024.

Peacekeeping is one of the few arenas where India's contribution is measured in casualties borne rather than resources spent, and New Delhi consistently invokes that record when pressing its claim for permanent membership of the UN Security Council - the argument being that the states which supply the troops have no say in writing the mandates those troops carry out. The presence of six women among the 210 recipients also matters for a second policy strand: India has pushed the deployment of women peacekeepers and all-women police units, and the Security Council's women, peace and security agenda measures troop-contributing countries against exactly that benchmark.
