Rare Loggerhead Sea Turtle Rescued Off the Mumbai Coast

The loggerhead takes its name from its unusually large head, which houses powerful jaws capable of crushing hard-shelled prey such as whelks and conchs. It is the world's largest hard-shelled turtle and the second largest living turtle after the leatherback, which has a leathery rather than bony shell. Adults carry a reddish-brown carapace, a pale yellow underside and four flippers, and can live 80 years or more. Loggerheads occur in every ocean except the coldest waters and are found far out at sea as well as in bays, lagoons, salt marshes and creeks. They navigate across ocean basins using the Earth's geomagnetic field as a map, returning across thousands of kilometres to nest.

Nesting by loggerheads is concentrated on the western rims of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans - chiefly in Oman, the United States and Australia - and India is not among its nesting countries. Along the Maharashtra coast it is the olive ridley that nests, so a loggerhead in Mumbai's harbour waters is a wanderer rather than a resident, and a distressed animal at the surface usually points to injury, entanglement or illness. That is why the rescue involved a clinical facility rather than immediate release. It also illustrates how marine rescue actually works in Mumbai: the sighting came from a routine patrol crew, and the specialist handling from the Mangrove Foundation, an arrangement in which enforcement and conservation agencies split the work between them.
