Airtel Payments Bank announced on 17 August 2026 that Shabnam Sinha will take over as chairperson.
Sunil Bharti Mittal steps down from the bank's board on 30 September 2026, ending a decade as non-executive chairman since April 2016.
Sinha's three-year term begins on 1 October 2026, cleared by the board and approved by the Reserve Bank of India.
She is already an independent director on the bank's board and chairs its Special Committee of the Board for Monitoring Frauds.
The bank reports over 121 million monthly active users, close to 30 million account holders and more than 5 lakh banking points.
A payments bank is a differentiated bank licensed by the RBI on the recommendations of the Nachiket Mor Committee. It may accept demand deposits up to Rs 2 lakh per customer (raised from Rs 1 lakh in April 2021), issue debit cards, and offer remittance, UPI and bill-payment services. It cannot lend or issue credit cards, and must invest a large share of its deposits in government securities. Its licence therefore makes it an instrument of financial inclusion and payments rather than of credit creation.
Simple Analogy: Think of it as a bank counter without a loan desk: money can come in, move around and go out, but nothing is lent from it.
