Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, the first Indian Chief of the Air Staff, conceived the idea of a national school football tournament in 1958 while he was heading the Air Force. The Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society was formed in 1960 and the first tournament was held the same year with about fifty school teams. Mukerjee did not live to see it grow - he died in Tokyo - and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, offering condolences, suggested that the tournament carry his name. The Air Force Sports Control Board took over the conduct of the tournament in 1994. A girls' Under-17 category was added in 2012, and the competition has since become one of the largest school-level football tournaments in Asia.

The opening fixture of the 65th edition, a Junior Girls Under-17 match, also reflects the shift since 2012, when the girls' category was added to a tournament that had run for five decades as a boys' competition.
