The gauge-converted 56-km Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh was inaugurated virtually on 18 August 2026.
The Gwalior-Kailaras MEMU service was extended to Birpur the same day, giving Gwalior direct rail links with Sabalgarh, Vijaypur and Birpur.
The section is part of the Gwalior-Sheopur corridor running through Morena and Sheopur districts, and will serve more than 100 villages.
The remaining 37-km Birpur-Seroni Road and 33-km Seroni Road-Sheopur Kalan stretches are near completion, with a future extension planned from Sheopur Kalan to Kota in Rajasthan.

Track gauge is the distance between the inner faces of the two rails. India inherited a mixed network of broad gauge (1,676 mm), metre gauge (1,000 mm) and narrow gauge (762 mm and 610 mm), which meant passengers and freight had to be transferred wherever two gauges met. Gauge conversion rebuilds a narrower line to broad gauge so that it joins the main network directly, allowing through running of standard rolling stock, heavier axle loads and higher speeds. Indian Railways has pursued this systematically under Project Unigauge, and the Kailaras-Birpur section is one such conversion.
Simple Analogy: A branch line on a different gauge is like a road that ends at a river with no bridge: everything has to be unloaded and carried across. Conversion builds the bridge.
