CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) unveiled three indigenous micro and small gas turbine engines - NJ-05 with 5 kg thrust, NJ-50 with 50 kg thrust and NJ-100 with 100 kg thrust - at the SSB Auditorium, CSIR Headquarters, New Delhi.
The engines are intended for tactical unmanned aerial vehicles, drone interceptors and compact missile systems, addressing a class of propulsion India has largely imported.
The scientific team, led by Shri R. Prathapanayaka, attributed the development to advances in high-RPM turbomachinery and high-temperature combustion technologies.
Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC), was Chief Guest; Dr N. Kalaiselvi, Director General CSIR and Secretary DSIR, and Dr Abhay A. Pashilkar, Director CSIR-NAL, also spoke.
CSIR-NAL's Director described the laboratory's evolving role as a multi-stage integrator for India's drone ecosystem, and said Indian industry including aerospace start-ups can manufacture these engines at scale.
A gas turbine runs on a continuous cycle: a compressor draws in air and raises its pressure, fuel is burnt in a combustor, and the hot high-pressure gas expands through a turbine that drives the compressor, with the remaining energy leaving as a high-velocity jet that produces thrust. In a turbojet, all the air taken in passes through the core and out of the nozzle - simple, compact and efficient at high speeds, which is why the configuration suits small missiles and fast expendable UAVs. In a turbofan, a large fan at the front pushes most of the air around the core rather than through it; this bypass air produces thrust more efficiently at subsonic speeds and much more quietly, which is why airliners use turbofans. The trade-off is frontal area and complexity, both of which a small UAV can ill afford. Thrust for these small engines is quoted in kilograms-force, as the release does with NJ-05, NJ-50 and NJ-100; large engines such as the Kaveri are quoted in kilonewtons, where one kilogram-force is about 9.8 newtons. Note also what a gas turbine buys over an electric motor and battery: chemical fuel carries far more energy per kilogram than a battery, so range, endurance and speed all improve - which is why interceptors and longer-range loitering munitions use turbines while small quadcopters do not.
Simple Analogy: A turbojet is a narrow hose at full pressure - a thin, very fast stream. A turbofan is a wide fan pushing a large volume of air gently. Both move you forward; the wide slow stream is more efficient at ordinary speeds, the narrow fast one wins when you need speed in a small package.

Key: Developed by CSIR-NAL; the original SARAS first flew on 29 May 2004 and is described as India's first indigenously designed and developed civilian aircraft. The 19-seater SARAS Mk-2 has completed its design phase and is moving towards prototype manufacture.
