India's installed non-fossil fuel power capacity reached 300.50 GW as on 31 July 2026, crossing the 300 GW mark for the first time.
This is more than 54% of India's total installed generation capacity of about 552 GW, and over 60% of the 500 GW non-fossil target set for 2030.

Installed capacity measures what the plants could produce if they ran flat out; generation measures what they actually produced. Solar and wind have low capacity utilisation factors because the sun sets and the wind drops, so a 54% non-fossil share of installed capacity translates into a considerably smaller share of units actually generated. Coal, with a much higher utilisation factor, still supplies the majority of India's electricity even as its share of capacity falls. Every India climate target has to be read for which of the two it uses — the Panchamrit 500 GW pledge and the 50% milestone are capacity targets, not generation targets.
