Datura, also called Dhatura, is a genus of flowering plants in the family Solanaceae — the same family as potato, tomato and brinjal. It contains tropane alkaloids such as atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine, which are toxic to humans and animals. Poisoning can cause dry mouth, dilated pupils, rapid heartbeat, confusion, hallucinations, psychosis, loss of consciousness and death, and the seeds, leaves, flowers and fruits are all hazardous when ingested. Datura poisoning is a recognised toxicological emergency in India, where the plant grows widely as a weed and an ornamental and features in traditional practices. Atropine itself is used in medicine in controlled doses, which is precisely why an uncontrolled dose taken as food is dangerous.

The case turns on a regulatory question larger than one plant: who is answerable when an unsafe product reaches a consumer through an online marketplace. The inquiry examined how poisonous botanical products passed platform quality checks and appeared for sale carrying food licence details, which points at vendor verification and listing controls rather than at any single seller. Treating the marketplace itself as a food business operator — and suspending its licence rather than only delisting the product — establishes that the platform carries the compliance duty for what it lists.
