The World Humanoid Robot Games are a competition in which humanoid machines are put through athletic events and simulated real-world tasks. The first edition was held in Beijing in 2025; the second ran from 22 to 26 August 2026 at the National Speed Skating Oval, the venue built for the 2022 Winter Olympics and popularly called the Ice Ribbon. Track events included the 100 m, 400 m, 1,500 m and 4x100 m relay, alongside high jump, football and gymnastics, plus 21 practical challenge events. Two points matter for accuracy. First, the 8.86-second run was recorded in a semifinal of the large-size robot division, not in a race against human athletes. Second, a robot's time and a sprinter's time belong to different categories altogether: Usain Bolt's 9.58 seconds, set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, remains the human world record and is unaffected by anything a machine does. Reports comparing the two are comparing engineering progress with athletic performance, not setting one against the other.

Running on two legs is a far harder engineering problem than rolling on wheels. A bipedal machine spends much of each stride with only one foot - or neither foot - on the ground, so it must continuously predict and correct the position of its centre of gravity, coordinate joint torques, and absorb impact without toppling. Achieving that at sprint speed demands fast actuators, high-frequency motion planning and onboard balance control working together. The jump from a winning time of 21.50 seconds in 2025 to 8.86 seconds in 2026 is therefore read as evidence of rapid gains in actuation, control algorithms and onboard decision-making rather than as a sporting result. The same capabilities - balance under disturbance, rapid gait adjustment, autonomous response - are what humanoid robots would need in warehouses, disaster sites and other unstructured environments, which is why the Games also run practical challenge events alongside the races.
