The Delhi government formally launched the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana on 26 August 2026 at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, where Chief Minister Rekha Gupta handed sanction letters to the first set of approved beneficiaries.
Every eligible woman gets Rs 2,500 a month, credited through Direct Benefit Transfer to an Aadhaar-linked bank account, with the first instalment due from 1 September 2026.
The scheme is the renamed version of the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana announced earlier by the Delhi government, and carries an allocation of Rs 5,110 crore in the 2026-27 Delhi Budget.
Registration on the dedicated portal opened on 1 August 2026; by 25 August more than 9.13 lakh women had registered and about 6.52 lakh applications had been finally submitted.
A beneficiary may take Rs 1,500 in a recurring or fixed deposit and Rs 1,000 in a Digital Rupee wallet, or place the entire Rs 2,500 in a deposit; money in the recurring deposit is locked in for three years.
The Digital Rupee, written e-rupee or eR, is sovereign currency issued in digital form by the Reserve Bank of India. It is a direct liability of the central bank, exactly like a currency note, which is what separates it from the balance in a bank account or a private wallet. The RBI began its wholesale pilot on 1 November 2022 and its retail pilot on 1 December 2022. By routing Rs 1,000 of the monthly Rs 2,500 into a Digital Rupee wallet, Delhi is using an ongoing central bank pilot as a benefit-delivery channel, while the remaining Rs 1,500 goes into a recurring or fixed deposit so that the transfer builds a savings balance rather than being spent immediately. A beneficiary who prefers not to use the wallet can direct the entire Rs 2,500 into the deposit.
Simple Analogy: A bank balance is a promise from your bank; a currency note is a promise from the central bank. The Digital Rupee is that same central bank promise, held on a phone instead of in a purse.
