A sudden flash flood swept down the Bhote Koshi and into the Trishuli river system on 26 August 2026, devastating Nepal's Rasuwa district and putting Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan on alert.
The surge was traced to a massive ice avalanche in the high Himalaya that fell into the Lhende Khola, a headwater stream on the Nepal-Tibet frontier; a seismic signal was recorded, but the United States Geological Survey assessed the waves as consistent with a landslide rather than a tectonic earthquake.
By 27 August the confirmed death toll in Nepal had passed 150 with more than 750 people missing, including 133 Indian nationals; three deaths were reported on the Chinese side.
Six hydropower stations in the Trishuli basin were damaged, the Rasuwagadhi customs post and the Gyirong border crossing were wrecked, and roughly 19 bridges and 40 km of road were destroyed.
India placed Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on alert as the wave moved downstream into the Gandak, with about 20 NDRF teams on standby and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu issuing emergency helplines.

A Himalayan valley can be flooded by three quite different mechanisms, and exams test the distinction. A cloudburst is a very intense, very localised rainfall event that overwhelms a catchment in minutes. A glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF, happens when the natural moraine or ice dam holding back a meltwater lake fails and the stored lake empties downstream - the 2023 South Lhonak Lake disaster on the Teesta in Sikkim is the textbook Indian case. The third, which is what happened here, is a rock or ice avalanche: a mass of ice and rock detaches from a high slope, falls thousands of feet into a river gorge, and the impact both displaces water and generates a debris-laden surge, sometimes after briefly damming the channel. The 2021 Chamoli disaster in Uttarakhand, which destroyed the Rishiganga and Tapovan hydropower projects, was of this type. The distinguishing signature is that such a collapse registers on seismometers - and here the United States Geological Survey read the recorded waves as being consistent with a landslide rather than a tectonic earthquake, even though Nepali officials initially attributed the avalanche to a quake.
Simple Analogy: A GLOF is a bathtub whose plug is pulled. An avalanche-triggered flood is a boulder dropped into a full bathtub - the water leaves in one violent slop, and the boulder goes downstream with it.
The stream that flooded is called the Lhende Khola near the frontier; below Rasuwagadhi it is the Bhote Koshi - a name Nepal uses for several rivers entering from Tibet, so this is not the Bhote Koshi of Sindhupalchok - and further down it becomes the Trishuli. The Trishuli joins the Kali Gandaki to form the Narayani, which crosses into India at Valmikinagar in West Champaran district of Bihar and is known there as the Gandak, meeting the Ganga near Patna. That chain is why an ice fall on the Tibetan frontier put Bihar's flood-control machinery on alert the same day: the water has nowhere else to go.
