HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines signed the final contract in Bengaluru on 26 August 2026 to develop and produce the Aravalli turboshaft engine.
The contract is executed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd., the 50:50 joint venture of the two companies.
The Aravalli is in the 3,500-4,000 shaft horsepower class and is named after the Aravalli mountain range.
It will power the 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter.
The IMRH is planned to replace the armed forces' Russian-origin Mi-17 medium-lift helicopters.
A turboshaft is a gas turbine arranged so that almost all the energy extracted from the hot gas is converted into rotating shaft power rather than into jet thrust. That shaft drives the helicopter's main and tail rotors through a reduction gearbox and transmission. A turbofan, by contrast, is optimised to push air backwards to produce thrust for a fixed-wing aircraft. Helicopter engine output is therefore rated in shaft horsepower (shp) rather than in pounds of thrust - which is why the Aravalli is described as a 3,500-4,000 shp class engine.
Simple Analogy: A turbofan is a fan blowing the aircraft forward; a turboshaft is the same engine core connected to a drive shaft, like a car engine turning wheels instead of blowing air.
