Carbon sequestration is the capture and long-term storage of atmospheric carbon in biomass, soils or other reservoirs. Biochar is a carbon-rich solid made by pyrolysis - heating organic matter such as crop or plantation residue at high temperature with very little oxygen, so that it chars rather than burns. Because the carbon in biochar resists decomposition for a long time, adding it to soil both stores carbon and improves water retention and soil structure. That dual benefit is what makes it attractive as a farm-level carbon-credit pathway: the residue that would otherwise be burnt in the open becomes a verifiable removal instead. At the workshop, Dr. A. R. Uthappa, Senior Scientist (Agroforestry), presented pilot work on converting farm and plantation residues from Kulagar systems into biochar, and Dr. Sandip Mandal of ICAR-CIAE, Bhopal demonstrated production using a portable unit. Mr. Sandeep Kanda of Core CarbonX explained the carbon project cycle and how agricultural projects enter carbon markets.
