India's finished steel consumption rose 7.9% year-on-year to 56 million tonnes in April-July 2026, against 51.9 MT a year earlier.
Finished steel production grew 4.7% to 54.7 MT and crude steel production grew 2.4% to 56.2 MT.
Consumption grew faster than production, and India remained a net importer of finished steel.
Finished steel imports jumped 36.6% to 2.77 MT while exports rose 35% to 2.29 MT; China was the largest import source at 30.9%.
Alloy steel was the standout segment, with production up 26.7% and exports up 150.7%.
