As per a Central Water Commission advisory, a sudden rise in the Trishuli river at Furke Khola in Nepal — about 160 km from the Indian border and near the Nepal-China border — was attributed to a suspected flash flood or glacial lake outburst flood, with the impact expected to travel downstream into India's Gandak river.
Bihar and Uttar Pradesh carried out evacuations and support for communities near the India-Nepal border and were advised to maintain close monitoring.
The CWC subsequently reported that water levels in reservoirs on the Nepal side were reducing and the situation was under control, with no panic-like situation.

A glacial lake forms when meltwater collects behind a natural dam of loose rock and debris — a moraine — or behind ice, in the space a retreating glacier has vacated. Such dams are not engineered and hold only by friction and geometry. When one fails, whether from overtopping, internal seepage, an avalanche or rockfall into the lake, or an earthquake, the lake empties in hours. The result is a flood wave far larger than any rainfall event could produce in that catchment, moving down a steep mountain valley and carrying enormous quantities of sediment and boulders. Two features make GLOFs a distinctive hazard. First, they are not seasonal in the way monsoon floods are — they can occur without rain, which is why they defeat rainfall-based forecasting. Second, the damage travels: the wave attenuates as valleys widen but can still raise river levels hundreds of kilometres downstream, across an international border, as the CWC advisory anticipated here for the Gandak. Warming has accelerated glacial retreat across the Himalaya, enlarging both the number and the size of these lakes, which is why GLOF risk is now treated as a climate-adaptation problem and not merely a geological one.
Simple Analogy: It is a dam burst where nobody built the dam. A pile of rubble left behind by a retreating glacier is holding back a lake, and when the rubble gives way the whole lake arrives downstream at once.
