On 2 September 2026, APEDA facilitated the flag-off of 18 metric tonnes of NPOP-certified ethnic organic rice from Tripura for export to Austria and the Netherlands.
The consignment was flagged off at Pragna Bhaban in Agartala and marks Tripura's first organic agricultural shipment to the European market.
It carried four indigenous varieties: Aromatic Harinarayan rice, Maimi Hanga black rice, Biron white sticky rice and Aromatic Kalikhasa rice.
The rice was aggregated from Farmer Producer Companies supported by the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency and shipped by Pratithi Organic Foods of Sonepat, Haryana.
The export followed market linkages created at a Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet that APEDA organised in Tripura in August 2026, and is expected to raise farmer returns by up to 40%.
NPOP is India's national standard and certification system for organic production, run under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry with APEDA as the implementing agency. It lays down what a producer may and may not use, accredits the certification bodies that inspect farms, and issues the transaction certificates that accompany a consignment. Its practical value is recognition abroad: an importing market that accepts NPOP does not require the produce to be certified again under its own scheme, which removes a cost that would otherwise fall on a small grower. This is why the certification, rather than the tonnage, is the significant part of an 18-tonne shipment - it establishes the route for everything that follows.
Simple Analogy: NPOP is the passport for organic produce: the crop still has to be grown correctly, but without the document it does not cross the border as organic.

A Farmer Producer Company is a producer-owned entity registered under the Companies Act, through which small farmers pool output, share processing and storage, and negotiate as one seller. No individual smallholder in Tripura could assemble 18 tonnes of a single certified variety, meet an importer's documentation requirements or absorb the cost of certification. The FPC does all three: it aggregates, it holds the certification, and it becomes the counterparty an exporter can actually contract with. This is the standard route by which produce from fragmented holdings reaches an export market.
