The Indian Patent Office has granted a patent to DRDO and the University of Hyderabad for BAM-H24, a next-generation solid rocket propellant fuel.
BAM-H24 is an energetic compound rich in boron, hydrogen and nitrogen, synthesised at the Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials at the university.
It can be used as a solid rocket fuel, a propellant additive or a burn-rate accelerator.
The compound offers high chemical and thermal stability, low sensitivity to impact and friction, and a non-hygroscopic nature that resists moisture in storage.
It is expected to deliver a higher specific impulse and a shorter ignition delay than existing options.
Specific impulse measures how much thrust a propulsion system produces for each unit of propellant it consumes, and is usually quoted in seconds. A higher specific impulse means more push from the same mass of fuel, which in a rocket translates directly into range, payload or both, because the propellant is most of what a rocket weighs at lift-off. Ignition delay, the other figure quoted for BAM-H24, is the time between the ignition command and the propellant actually burning - a shorter delay makes a motor's performance more predictable, which matters most in missiles that must respond instantly.
Simple Analogy: Specific impulse is the rocket equivalent of a car's mileage: kilometres per litre tells you how far a litre takes you, and specific impulse tells you how much thrust a kilogram of propellant buys.
