Researchers at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) have described two new species of pistol shrimp from the Kochi backwaters.
They are named Alpheus vembanadi, after the Vembanad backwaters, and Alpheus hari, after CUSAT Senior Professor M. Harikrishnan.
Specimens were collected from gillnets, a traditional fishing method used in the backwaters.
Alpheus vembanadi occurs year-round in the Kochi backwaters and tolerates salinity up to 31 parts per thousand.
Alpheus hari was found in very low-salinity water and survived in freshwater under laboratory conditions.
When the snapper claw shuts at very high speed, the water jet it throws drops local pressure below the vapour pressure, forming a bubble. The bubble collapses almost instantly, releasing a shock wave and a sharp report.

The Kochi backwaters form the northern part of the Vembanad lake system in Kerala — India's longest lake and the largest in the state, opening to the Arabian Sea at Kochi. The Vembanad-Kol Wetland is a designated Ramsar site, which is why a euryhaline estuarine species found here has conservation as well as taxonomic significance.
Alpheus hari's ability to move between brackish and fresh water makes it euryhaline, a trait shared with hilsa and mullets and central to estuarine ecology questions.
