Lieutenant Stanzin Tsangyang was commissioned into the Indian Army at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, on 5 September 2026, becoming the first woman officer from the Zanskar region of Ladakh.
Zanskar was part of Kargil district when she enrolled, making her also the first woman officer from Kargil district.
She was commissioned at the Passing Out Parade of the SSC-122 and SSC (Women)-36 courses, in which 342 officer cadets — including 29 women — were commissioned, along with 17 cadets from friendly foreign countries.
She studied for 14 years at Lamdon Model School in Leh, took a scholarship to read Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University in Assam, joined the NCC there, and cleared the CDS (II) 2024 examination.
Zanskar became a separate district of Ladakh when five new districts were notified on 27 April 2026, taking Ladakh from two districts to seven.

Zanskar is a high-altitude, sparsely populated valley in the Union Territory of Ladakh, carved out of Kargil district as a separate district in April 2026 with its headquarters at Padum. The commissioning itself took place at OTA Chennai, over 3,000 km away in Tamil Nadu.
