The Tripura State Mental Health Authority issued show-cause notices on 9 September 2026 to 19 private de-addiction and mental health rehabilitation centres running without registration.
The notices cite failure to obtain approval from the competent authority and to meet the standards prescribed under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017.
The centres have seven days from receipt to reply, failing which action will be taken without further notice.
The crackdown followed the death of a patient at a private rehabilitation centre in Agartala, in which eight people including the centre's owner were arrested.
The principal central law on the rights of persons with mental illness and the regulation of mental health establishments. It came into force on 29 May 2018 and repealed the Mental Health Act, 1987. It was enacted in pursuance of India's obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 2006, which India ratified in 2007.
No person or organisation may establish or run a mental health establishment unless registered with the Authority. Establishments under the Central Government register with the Central Mental Health Authority; all others register with the State Mental Health Authority.
The criminal case arising from the patient's death at the Agartala centre was registered under Sections 103(1) and 118(1).
