China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on 10 September 2026 that President Xi Jinping will travel to New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit on 12-13 September, at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation.
It is Xi's first visit to India in nearly seven years; his last was the second India-China informal summit at Mamallapuram on 11-12 October 2019.
Xi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Modi on the summit sidelines, the third successive year the two have met after Kazan in 2024 and Tianjin in 2025.
His delegation includes Cai Qi, member of the CPC Politburo Standing Committee, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The visit follows a gradual thaw since the 2020 eastern Ladakh clashes, even as China has become India's largest trading partner with a record trade deficit of about $112 billion in 2025-26.
