The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared the country's largest recorded multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak over on 11 September 2026.
It caused 12,883 illnesses in 21 states, 570 hospitalisations and two deaths, both in Michigan.
The source was processed iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico, grown in central Mexico and recalled on 17 July 2026.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, spread through contaminated food or water.
An intestinal illness caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis, a single-celled parasite spread through food or water contaminated with faeces. Symptoms appear about a week after exposure: watery diarrhoea, cramps, bloating, nausea and fatigue. Washing produce alone cannot reliably remove it.
