Srinagar artisan Simran Irshad has developed 'Grass Mache', a craft technique that uses aquatic weeds and grasses removed from Dal Lake as raw material.
The dried, pulverised weeds are mixed with recycled paper pulp and a binding agent, then moulded into durable pieces with a stone-like texture.
The technique adapts Kashmir's GI-tagged papier-mache tradition. She turned to it after rising paper prices made the traditional craft costlier.
She has trained about 50 women in papercraft, and 15 of them now work with the weed-based technique.
