WPI inflation rose to 9.92% in August 2026 from 9.78% in July, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on 14 September.
Fuel and power inflation jumped to 22.93% from 20.05%. Manufactured products edged up to 8.37%, a high for the new series, while primary articles eased to 7.76% from 8.52%.
August's reading is the second highest in the new WPI series (base year 2022-23). June's figure was revised up to 9.97% from 9.87%.
Retail (CPI) inflation for August 2026 stood at 4.82%, above the RBI's 4% target. September WPI data is due on 14 October 2026.

Sets the policy repo rate to meet the CPI inflation target. It held rates in August 2026 and meets next on 5-7 October 2026.
The Central Government, in consultation with the RBI, sets the inflation target in terms of CPI. This is why the MPC looks at retail inflation, not the WPI, even when wholesale inflation is close to 10%.
