The Prime Minister paid homage to Bengali novelist Saratchandra Chattopadhyay on his 150th birth anniversary (born 15 September 1876).

He noted that Saratchandra's works, translated into every Indian language, depict rural Bengali society, and cited his commitment to social reform, women's rights and nationalism.

His novel Pather Dabi was proscribed by the British government in 1927 for sedition.

●Saratchandra Chattopadhyay: born 15 September 1876, Debanandapur, Hooghly (West Bengal); died 16 January 1938, Calcutta; 15 September 2026 = 150th birth anniversary.
●Major works: Parineeta (1914), Devdas (1917), Srikanta (four parts, 1917–33); adapted into more than 40 films.
●Pather Dabi: serialised in Bangabani 1922–26, book 31 August 1926; proscribed on 4 January 1927 under Section 124A IPC (sedition); ban lifted 1 March 1939.
●Jagattarini Gold Medal: awarded to him by Calcutta University in 1923.
●Bengal Renaissance: Raja Ram Mohan Roy (Brahmo Sabha, 1828) is called its father; Bankim Chandra's Anandamath (1882) carried Vande Mataram; Tagore won the 1913 Literature Nobel for Gitanjali.
