Sri Lanka Navy Commander VAdm Damian Fernando on maiden official visit to India
•
Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, is on an official visit to India from 26 to 29 August 2026, his first since taking over, aimed at strengthening bilateral maritime cooperation and navy-to-navy engagement.
•
He was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block, New Delhi and laid a wreath at the National War Memorial on 27 August 2026, and held discussions with Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, on joint operations, capacity building, training and maritime security measures.
•
He is also meeting senior defence officials and representatives of the Indian defence industry, and will travel to Kochi to visit Indian naval training establishments and Headquarters Southern Naval Command.

ECI holds third regional conference on Electoral Literacy Clubs 2.0 and ECINET at Chennai
•
The Election Commission of India held its third regional conference on 'Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC 2.0) and ECINET' at Chennai on 27 August 2026, attended by students and teachers from schools, colleges and universities across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar saying the students of today are the torchbearers of democracy tomorrow.

ELC 2.0, carrying the tagline 'Learn Democracy. Lead Democracy.', recasts Electoral Literacy Clubs as structured, digitally enabled, year-round platforms running on the ECINet stack through a dedicated ELC portal, aimed at an ecosystem of about 15 lakh schools with nearly 25 crore students and over one crore teachers, plus nearly 1,500 universities and around 70,000 higher-education institutions with an estimated enrolment of 4.33 crore.

Earlier the same day the CEC interacted with over 500 Booth Level Officers of Tamil Nadu, crediting them with the smooth Special Intensive Revision of the State's electoral rolls and with the highest-ever turnout in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, at 4.93 crore votes polled and 86.03 per cent turnout.

President appoints three judicial officers as judges of Himachal Pradesh High Court
•
The President, exercising power under the Constitution and after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, appointed Shri Chirag Bhanu as a Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and Shri Bhupesh Sharma and Shri Yogesh Jaswal as Additional Judges of that Court.
•
All three are serving judicial officers elevated to the bench, and the appointments were notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice on 27 August 2026.
•
The notification illustrates the two distinct constitutional routes to a High Court bench: Article 217 for a permanent Judge and Article 224 for an Additional Judge appointed for a fixed period not exceeding two years.

Madhya Pradesh procures record 5.33 lakh tonnes of summer moong at MSP
•
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan held a virtual review with Madhya Pradesh's Agriculture and Horticulture Ministers on summer moong procurement and crop insurance implementation.
•
For the 2026 season the Centre initially approved procurement of 4,54,580 tonnes of summer moong for Madhya Pradesh and later added 84,492 tonnes, taking the approved quantity to 5,39,072 tonnes; actual procurement closed at 5.33 lakh tonnes, within the approved limit.
•
Procurement was carried out mainly through NAFED and NCCF, and improved on summer 2025, when 3,93,123.79 tonnes were procured against an approved 4,19,692 tonnes.

Health Ministry review: 160 district hospitals to get trauma care upgrades by March 2027
•
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed implementation of the health sector announcements of the Union Budget 2026-27, covering emergency and trauma care, allied health workforce, drug regulation, mental healthcare, clinical research and medical value tourism.
•
A gap analysis of District Hospitals against the Indian Public Health Standards has been completed and 613 District Hospitals categorised for phased strengthening: 160 in Phase I targeted by March 2027, 203 in Phase II and the remaining 250 in Phase III.
•
The Budget initiative aims to raise emergency and trauma care capacity in District Hospitals by 50 per cent through Emergency and Trauma Care Centres, supported by National Emergency Life Support training.

Samarthak, Navy's first indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel, delivered by L&T Kattupalli

Samarthak, the first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) built by Larsen & Toubro Ltd at Kattupalli, was delivered to the Indian Navy on 27 August 2026.

The ship carries over 75 per cent indigenous content and has been conceived primarily as a versatile trial and evaluation platform for naval weapons and sensors.
•
It is also engineered for maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling and support to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations; the name 'Samarthak' means 'The Proponent'.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project at Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur on 27 August 2026.

The project creates overhauling facilities for T-72 and T-90 tanks at an estimated cost of Rs 472 crore, with a designed capacity of 80 tanks per annum.
•
Vehicle Factory Jabalpur is a unit of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), a Miniratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking created when the Ordnance Factory Board was corporatised.

Jal Shakti asks States to converge JJM 2.0 and SBM-G works under VB-G RAM G Act
•
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, working with the Ministry of Rural Development, has asked States and UTs to converge works of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 and Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) 2.0 with works taken up under the Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Act, 2025.
•
Water security is one of the four thematic focus areas of the VB-G RAM G Act, the rural employment law that replaced MGNREGA, which makes it the natural meeting point of the three programmes.
•
States have been asked to prioritise water security in Viksit Gram Panchayat Plans (VGPPs), align VGPPs technically with the Village Action Plans of JJM 2.0 and SBM-G 2.0, and put the officer in charge of Rural Water Supply / Public Health Engineering on the State-level Steering Committee constituted under the Act.

African Union and UNDP Delegation Studies India's Land Records DPI: 40.58 Crore Bhu-Aadhaars

A delegation of the African Union Commission, officials from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Zambia, and the United Nations Development Programme visited the Department of Land Resources at Kartavya Bhawan-3, New Delhi, for a technical engagement on digital public infrastructure in land governance.
•
The visit focused on the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme, the Unique Land Parcel Identification Number (Bhu-Aadhaar), the National Generic Document Registration System and the NAKSHA urban survey initiative.
•
DoLR reported that 99.90% of textual Records of Rights are computerised, 97.43% of cadastral maps digitised, 76.16% of parcels georeferenced and 85.24% spatial-textual integration achieved, with over 40.58 crore parcels assigned a 14-digit Bhu-Aadhaar.

Restructured PM SVANidhi Completes a Year: ₹6,294 Crore Lent, Extension to 2030
•
PM SVANidhi, launched on 1 June 2020 to give urban street vendors collateral-free working capital loans, has completed one year of its restructured phase, which the Union Cabinet approved on 27 August 2025.
•
Lending under the restructured scheme runs up to 31 March 2030 and targets 1.15 crore street vendors, of whom 50 lakh would be new beneficiaries.
•
In the first year after restructuring, 21.86 lakh loans worth ₹6,294 crore reached 10.56 lakh new beneficiaries; a UPI-linked RuPay credit card with a limit of up to ₹30,000 was introduced and 27,077 cards approved.

MoSPI Releases Concept Paper on Monetary Asset Accounts for Marine Fish Resources
•
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has released a Concept Paper titled 'Methodological Approach for Compilation of Experimental Monetary Asset Accounts of Marine Fish Resources'.
•
The paper is aligned with the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) Central Framework, which the United Nations Statistical Commission has endorsed as an international statistical standard.
•
MoSPI has compiled environmental accounts under the UN SEEA framework since 2018 through the EnviStats India series, covering land, water, forest, pollination and minerals; marine fish resources are the new extension.

India Presents Snow Leopard Science at Moscow Roundtable Under Irbis–IBCA Partnership

India took part in the Russian-Indian Roundtable Meeting on Snow Leopard Study and Conservation on 26 August 2026 at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana completed 12 years, having been launched on 28 August 2014 as India's National Mission for Financial Inclusion under the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance.

As on 19 August 2026 the scheme had 59.09 crore accounts holding deposits of ₹3,16,514 crore — an average of ₹5,356 per account — against 14.72 crore accounts in 2015.
•
Women hold 32.92 crore accounts (55.7%) and 45.95 crore accounts (77.8%) are in rural and semi-urban areas; 13.14 crore are urban and metropolitan.
