Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister wrote to the Prime Minister urging that no statutory or administrative approval be granted to Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir Project unless it fully complies with the 2007 CWDT Award and the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment.

Mekedatu, on the Cauvery in Karnataka's Ramanagara district (~100 km south of Bengaluru, 4-5 km from the Tamil Nadu border), proposes a 48-67 TMC reservoir costing ₹6,000-9,000 crore, to secure Bengaluru's drinking water and generate 400 MW hydropower.

Under the Supreme Court's 2018 verdict, Karnataka's Cauvery allocation rose to 284.75 TMC and Tamil Nadu's fell to 404.25 TMC, with Karnataka required to release 177.25 TMC annually to Tamil Nadu at Biligundlu.

The project would submerge 3,000-4,900 hectares of forest land within the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, adding an environmental dimension to the dispute.
